    前168年，在第三次马其顿战争中，马其顿国王珀尔修斯率领的军队在彼得那战役被罗马军队击败。

    1815年，法兰西帝国皇帝拿破仑在滑铁卢战役战败后宣布退位。

    1900年，举世闻名的中国甘肃敦煌莫高窟藏经洞被发现。敦煌莫高窟下寺道士王圆禄在清理积沙时，无意中发现了藏经洞，并挖出了公元４世纪至１１世纪的佛教经卷、社会文书、刺绣、绢画、法器等文物５万余件。这一发现为研究中国及中亚古代历史、地理、宗教、经济、政治、民族、语言、文学、艺术、科技提供了数量极其巨大、内容极为丰富的珍贵资料。后经英、法、日、美、俄等国探险家的盗窃掠夺，藏经洞绝大部分文物不幸流散到世界各地，仅剩下少部分留存于国内，造成中国文化史上的空前浩劫。

    1941年，法西斯德国撕毁苏德互不侵犯条约，出动１９０个师、３５００辆坦克、５０００多架飞机，在从波罗的海到黑海的１８００公里战线上，分３路对苏联发动突然袭击，使苏联国土成为世界反法西斯战争的欧洲主战场。

    1950年，中国邮电部邮政总局发行全国统一邮票，原各地区发行的分区邮票９月１日起停用。

    1967年，李立三逝世。李立三，湖南醴陵人，１９１９年赴法国勤工俭学，１９２１年回国后加入中国共产党，曾领导安源路矿工人大罢工，参加领导了五卅运动、八一南昌起义，新中国成立后历任中央人民政府委员、政务院政务委员、劳动部部长，中共中央工业交通工作部副部长、中共中央华北局书记处书记等职，是中共第四至第八届中央委员、第六届中央政治局委员。

    1978年，美国天文学家詹姆斯·克里斯蒂在检查冥王星的照片时，发现其卫星冥卫一。

    1979年，中国与爱尔兰建交。爱尔兰位于欧洲西部大西洋的爱尔兰岛上，首都都柏林。

    1986年，在墨西哥世界杯足球赛阿根廷对英格兰的比赛中，马拉多纳攻入上帝之手和世纪最佳进球两个入球。

    1988年，中国著名作家萧军逝世，终年８１岁。萧军，辽宁锦县（今凌海市）人，毕业于东北陆军讲武堂，１９２９年开始发表作品，著有长篇小说《八月的乡村》《第三代》《五月的矿山》，小说散文集《跋涉》(合作)，历史长篇小说《吴越春秋史话》，传记文学《我的童年》等。

    1999年，北京大学英语系与西语系、俄语系、东语系合并成立北京大学外国语学院（PKUSFL）。

    2000年，北京大学外国语学院1周年院庆。

    2001年，北京大学外国语学院2周年院庆。

    2002年，北京大学外国语学院3周年院庆。

    2003年，北京大学外国语学院4周年院庆。

    2004年，北京大学外国语学院5周年院庆。

1938: Two years after Adolf Hitler took German boxer Max Schmeling's defeat of American Joe Louis as a sign of Nazi superiority, Louis defeats Schmeling in their rematch by knocking him out in the first round.


1940: France signs an armistice with Nazi Germany after the fall of Paris, giving Germany control over all but the southeastern section of France, which is governed by a collaborationist government in Vichy.


1941: Breaking the nonaggression pact signed by the two countries in 1939, Germany invades the Soviet Union, sending more than 3 million troops across the border.


1944: President Franklin Roosevelt signs the Servicemen's Readjustment Act, known as the GI Bill of Rights, which provides tuition, low-interest mortgages and other benefits to veterans.


1977: Former attorney general John Mitchell begins serving his sentence for his role in the Watergate break-in and cover-up, becoming the first U.S. attorney general to go to prison.


1978: U.S. astronomer James W. Christy discovers that the planet Pluto has a moon more than half its diameter, which he names Charon.

1999: The Department of English of Peking University, along with the Department of Western Languages, the Department of Russian and the Department of Eastern Languages, emerges into the School of Foreign Languages (PKUSFL).
